A Minor Pentatonic Scale – Theory , Shape / Positions with Tabs

A Minor Pentatonic Scale Consist of 5 Notes, its derived from A Major Scale and taking the following notes

Root (1)
Minor third (b3)
Fourth (4)
Fifth (5)
Minor seventh (b7)

So, for example, in the key of A minor, the notes of the scale would be:

A, C, D, E, G

One important thing to note about the minor pentatonic scale is that it’s essentially a subset of the natural minor scale and it includes the first, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh notes of the natural minor scale.

The theory behind the pentatonic scale is actually quite simple. Because it contains only five notes, it’s a very accessible scale for beginning guitarists and other musicians. And because it omits the second and sixth notes of the natural minor scale, which can sometimes sound dissonant or unstable, it has a very smooth and pleasing sound.

The minor scale is a fundamental concept in music theory and is used in a variety of musical genres, from classical to pop to jazz. Its important to learn diffrent minor scale shape / positions so that you can be fluent with phrasing using for example a minor scale shape.

Music Theory of a Minor Scale: The minor scale is based on a specific sequence of intervals. Or distances between notes. In Western music theory, there are three types of minor scales: natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor.

The natural minor scale, also known as the Aeolian mode, follows the pattern of whole steps (W) and half steps (H) as W-H-W-W-H-W-W. This scale is sometimes referred to as the “pure” minor scale because it does not contain any altered or raised notes.

For a natural minor scale, the notes are:

What is the Minor Chord Scale?

The minor chord scale is a collection of chords that are built from a particular minor scale, for example, an Am chord scale would include chords built from the notes of the Am scale (A, B, C, D, E, F, G). Like the major chord scale, the chords in am chord scale can be derived using a specific formula.

The most common formula for constructing Am is the following: Minor – Diminished – Major – Minor – Minor – Major – Major. This pattern is different from the formula used to build a major chord scale, which is Major – Minor – Minor – Major – Major – Minor – Diminished – Major.

Breaking Down the Minor Chord Scale:

Now that you know the formula for constructing a scale, let’s take a closer look at each chord in the scale:

Minor: The first chord in the scale is always a minor chord. In the key of A minor, this would be an Am chord.
Diminished: The second chord in the scale is always a diminished chord. In the key of A minor, this would be a Bdim chord.
Major: The third chord in the scale is always a major chord. In the key of A minor, this would be a C chord.
Minor: The fourth chord in the scale is always a minor chord. In the key of A minor, this would be a Dm chord.
Minor: The fifth chord in the scale is always a minor chord. In the key of A minor, this would be an Em chord.
Major: The sixth chord in the scale is always a major chord. In the key of A minor, this would be an F chord.
Major: The seventh chord in the scale is always a major chord. In the key of A minor, this would be a G chord.

Knowing the chord scale can help you figure out the chords in any minor key. You can use this knowledge to improvise solos, write chord progressions, and understand the relationship between chords in a song. If you can figure out the home chord of a song, in 90% songs you will see other chord within other 6 chord of the chord scale
